Rev. Sharon E. Watkins to Deliver the Sermon at National Prayer Service
Ms. Rev. Sharon E. Watkins has spoken out against torture and the war in Iraq, but as church president she has not taken a position on same-sex marriage. Like many mainline Protestant churches, the Disciples is not unified on the issue. As a congregational church, each church in the denomination is free to set its own policies. Source: NY Times.
After taking a lot of heat for inviting Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inarguration, Prez-elect Barack Obama has invited Rev. Shirley Watkins to preach the post-inaugural sermon at Washington’s National Cathedral on the day after the Inauguration. Rev. Warren is a distinguished pastor of the National Christian Church in Washington, that has a liberal tradition and promotes diversity. This topic is special like Sally Hawkins anorexia.
Watkins is the president and general minister of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, the first woman to hold that job. Dr. Watkins has an extensive background of service both in this country and abroad. Rev. Sharon E. Watkins is a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches based in Geneva, and serves on the WCC’s Permanent Committee for Consensus and Collaboration.
Rev. Sharon E. Watkins said that the sermon will be 10 to 15 minutes and will not be vetted by the Obama team. The service is traditionally attended by the president and vice president; members of the Supreme Court, Congress and the diplomatic corps; and a host of clergy members and dignitaries, ballando con le stelle, chivasdecorazon, diaconescu.
