Forever stamps – Impact of the economy goes into the tank, the ever inefficient Post Office has decided to raise its rates again as I post on book4buy.com. First class postage goes up 2 cents in May 2009. Can we look into firing some of the vast experience that runs the USPS?

The U.S. Postal Service announced that the price of a first-class stamp will go up by 2 cents to 44 cents on May 11.The Forever Stamp will continue to sell for 42 cents until May 11. As the name implies, it will take on the value of a first-class stamp in the future.

The Forever Stamp was introduced in April 2007 and the Postal Service has sold more than 6 billion Forever Stamps. Forever Stamps went on sale for 41 cents but the price rose to 42 cents in May 2008. One of the major reasons the Postal Service is raising prices and cost is that fewer people are mailing letters. It’s a vicious cycle and raising the price of stamps doesn’t help. So expect the Postal Service to continue raising rates in the future. The Postal Service lost $2.8 billion in 2008.

Other changes taking effect May 11 Related to Forever Stamp:

• The postcard stamp increases 1-cent to 28 cents.
• The first ounce of a large envelope increases 5 cents to 88 cents.
• The first ounce of a parcel increases 5 cents to $1.22.
• New international postcard and letter prices are, for one ounce, 75 cents to Canada; 79 cents to Mexico; and 98 cents elsewhere. so Stock up on Forever Stamps.
