Whiplash Iron Man – Whiplash is a fictional character in the Marvel Universe. Whiplash first appeared as a member of the Band of Baddies in Marvel Comics Presents #49 (May 1990).
Iron Man 2 Villains Whiplash and Black Widow Cast
The Iron Man 2 villains Whiplash and Black Widow have been cast. The role of Russian spy Black Widow (a.k.a Natasha Romanoff, Natalia Romanova) has gone to Scarlett Johansson. Originally British actress Emily Blunt was cast in the role, and when her involvement started to look doubtful, Dollhouse’s Eliza Dushku publicly begged for the role, but it was not to be. Iron Man 2 is due in theaters May 7, 2010.
Rourke will play fellow Russian Whiplash, or, more accurately, a combination of that character and the comic book character known as the Crimson Dynamo. It’s good that they aren’t doing the Crimson Dynamo exactly as he appears in the comics, for the simple reason that he is ridiculously similar to the first movie’s Iron Monger. Almost interchangeable, in fact.
Blunt was unable to play the role due to contractual obligations with 20th Century Fox, who require her to star in an adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels whilst Iron Man 2 is in production. The role Johansson will play first appeared in 1964’s Tales of Suspense 52, the title that introduced Iron Man. The character, who not only has ties to Iron Man, but also to Spider-Man and Daredevil, will likely play some role in the Marvel’s Avengers movie.
Emily Blunt fit the role like a glove, so news that Paramount were unable to work around her commitments to Fox is news of the bad variety…but Johansson apparently screen tested for the role and, despite losing out to Blunt initially, clearly manifested some of the qualities Favreau and Co were looking for, so hopefully her performance will be good enough to make us forget what might have been.
Johansson will be joining Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Samuel L Jackson, and the recently confirmed Mickey Rourke.
